Before and after of an overgrown fence line cleared and new fence posts set along a red barn

How much does fence installation cost in Florida?

Farm and field wire fence on open, straight ground runs about $2 to $6 per foot installed. That is the range in published extension budgets and national cost guides. A square acre lands near $1,700 to $3,500 before corners, gates and clearing. Wood, chain link and vinyl run $9 to $30 per foot.

Fence is the trade we grew out of before land clearing took over. Our farm and field fence installation puts woven wire and barbed runs on wood posts. Every figure below comes from university extension budgets and published cost guides. A real number for your line takes an on-site look.

What does farm and field fence cost per foot?

Wire fence sits at the cheap end of the fence market. Published cost guides put woven wire field fence at $2 to $4 per foot installed. Barbed wire runs $1.25 to $6 per foot, and high-tensile $1.60 to $4.50. Labor alone for wire fence runs $40 to $60 per hour.

Fence typeInstalled cost per footNotes
Woven wire / field fence$2–$4 typicalFull range $1.50–$6. One 2026 guide says $5–$8.
Barbed wire$1.25–$6Extension budgets show $1.99–$3.03 with an owner crew.
High-tensile$1.60–$4.50Materials alone run $0.70–$2 per foot.
Electrified high-tensile$1.21–$2.86Extension budget rates, owner crew, not contractor installed.
Wood post-and-rail$6–$16Split rail runs $12–$17.
Chain link$9–$30A Florida contractor averages about $13 per foot on 4-foot fence.
Wood privacy$13–$19Some 2026 guides run wood installed up to $50.
Vinyl$15–$30A Florida contractor averages about $20 per foot on 4-foot fence.

Those market ranges cover a contractor crew. University extension budgets price the same fences with an owner crew and a post driver. University of Missouri Extension, at April 2026 prices, puts woven wire with a barbed top strand at $3.94 per foot. That includes one 20-foot gate and driven steel corners.

Iowa State University Extension, at December 2024 prices with no gate, puts woven wire at $2.34 per foot. Five-strand barbed comes in at $1.99. Both budgets assume a straight, continuous quarter mile on gently rolling ground, which is 1,320 feet with few rocks.

How much does it cost to fence 1, 5 or 10 acres?

A square acre needs about 835 feet of fence. Cost guides put 1 acre of wire or electric fence at $1,000 to $5,000. Most woven wire jobs land at $1,700 to $3,500. Five acres runs $2,000 to $11,000, and ten acres $2,500 to $16,000.

The per-acre price drops as the parcel grows. Five acres takes about 1,870 feet of fence, and 10 acres about 2,640 feet, or half a mile. Corners, braces and gates spread over more feet on a bigger block.

What adds to a fence quote?

Fence is quoted by the foot, then corners, braces, gates and water gaps get added per item. Both extension budgets say gates are not included in their estimates. A 20-foot pipe farm gate is $250 in material alone. Installed gates run $150 to $500 each.

Missouri Extension lists steel pipe corner posts at $54 each and H-brace assemblies at $73.20. Every corner and every gate opening needs a brace assembly. Longer runs pull the per-foot number back down.

Rocky or soggy ground slows the work, and the extension budgets assume neither. Missouri Extension counts about 22.5 hours per quarter mile for woven wire with a post driver. That is one and a half to three crew days.

Sandy soil sets the post depth. The rule of thumb buries one-third to one-half of a post’s above-ground height. Florida installers commonly go about 3 feet deep in sand, in a hole about three times the post width.

The dirt changes across the service area. Lakeland sand under Milton and Pensacola drains fast and moves when water runs over it. Red Bay sandy loam up around Jay holds a shape better. Leon sand in Navarre stays wet most of the summer.

Does an overgrown fence line cost extra?

Yes, and the published budgets leave it out. Missouri Extension does not price removing an old fence or the brush grown up in the row. Vegetation removal costs exponentially more as the size and quantity of trees and brush increases. One guide puts brush, vines and roots grown into a line at $2 to $5 per linear foot.

A fence line with small trees and brush can be cleared with light equipment such as a skid steer. Large trees may need a bulldozer or excavator at $200 or more per hour.

We open the row with a forestry mulching pass down the line first. The stumps ground out of the run come next, then the fence goes in. We clear the line and build the fence in the same job.

Published mulching guides put fence-line mulching at $1 to $5 per foot, or $5,000 to $20,000 per mile. For a whole block instead of one row, see what land clearing costs per acre in Florida.

Tearing out the old fence is its own line item. Cost guides put wood fence removal at $3 to $7 per foot and chain link at $2 to $5. Posts set in concrete add $25 to $50 each, because pulling a concrete post is 5 to 10 times slower.

Do you need a permit for a fence in Santa Rosa, Escambia or Okaloosa County?

It depends on the county and whether you are inside a city. Unincorporated Santa Rosa County does not require a fence permit. Escambia County requires a Land Use Certificate for fence installation, with a $50 fee. The City of Pensacola charges $35 and wants a site plan.

Santa Rosa allows fences up to 8 feet on side and rear property lines. Inside the 25-foot front setback the limit is 4 feet, or 5 feet for chain link. Nothing goes within 20 feet of an intersection, and barbed wire is out in residential subdivisions.

Property inside the Milton, Gulf Breeze or Jay city limits follows city rules. Milton requires a development permit for every new fence, and for any repair of 50 percent or more.

Escambia County caps residential front yards at 3 feet solid or 4 feet see-through. Side and rear yards go to 8 feet. Barbed wire and electrified fence are permitted in the agricultural and rural districts, which are Ag, RR and RMU.

The Okaloosa County fence guide is dated 2012, so confirm the current rule with Okaloosa Growth Management. It calls for a building permit on fence made of anything but wood, chain link, vinyl or wrought iron. Fences there may not exceed 8 feet, and barbed wire is prohibited in residential districts.

The Florida Building Code exempts fences 6 feet or less from a building permit. Zoning and flood rules still apply. Above 6 feet the exemption ends, so ask the county. Clearing the land carries its own rules, and our Florida land clearing permit guide covers those.

A farm fence gets a wider exemption. Under Florida Statutes 604.50, a farm fence on bona fide agricultural land is exempt from the Florida Building Code. It is also exempt from any county or city code or fee, though floodplain rules still apply. Santa Rosa County asks for the Agricultural Classification from the Property Appraiser and a notarized affidavit.

Florida Statutes 588.011 sets the bar for a legal fence. It is at least 3 feet high with three or more strands of barbed or other soft wire. Posts sit no more than 20 feet apart. Other materials count if they meet the same standard.

Gates have to meet the same standard as the fence. The other option is a cattle guard at least 6 feet wide. A general fence under 588.01 is different. It stands at least 5 feet high, with no gap over 4 inches in the bottom 2 feet.

Florida has no statute that splits the cost of a boundary fence between two property owners. State law also does not force a livestock owner to fence. An owner who lets animals run at large is liable for the damage, under Florida Statutes 588.15 and 588.24.

UF/IFAS recommends putting any shared fence deal in writing, with both signatures and a description of the land. It needs two witnesses and a notary.

We build farm and field fence across Santa Rosa, Escambia and Okaloosa Counties, from Pace out to Crestview. Woven wire and barbed runs go on wood posts, with braced corners and ends and gates hung. If the line is grown up, we open it first and then build. Call (850) 910-2447 or ask for a free on-site estimate, and you get a written number.

Frequently asked questions

How much does 100 feet of fence cost?
Published cost guides put woven wire field fence at $2 to $4 per foot installed. That puts 100 feet near $200 to $400. Barbed wire runs $1.25 to $6 per foot, so the same 100 feet lands at $125 to $600. A gate adds $150 to $500 on top.
What is the cheapest fence to build?
Electrified high-tensile wire is the cheapest in both extension budgets. Iowa State prices five-strand electrified high-tensile at $1.21 per foot with an owner crew. Missouri Extension puts the same fence at $2.86 per foot. Widening high-tensile post spacing from 20 to 30 feet with stay rods saves about $0.17 per foot.
How deep should fence posts go in sandy Florida soil?
The rule of thumb buries one-third to one-half of a post's above-ground height. Florida installers commonly set posts about 3 feet deep in sand, in a hole about three times the post width. That is installer guidance, not code. Any post in ground contact should carry a pressure-treated ground-contact rating.
Who pays for a fence on a property line in Florida?
Florida has no statute that splits the cost of a boundary fence between two property owners. State law also does not require a livestock owner to fence. An owner whose animals run at large is liable for the damage under Florida Statutes 588.15 and 588.24. UF/IFAS recommends a written agreement with both signatures, two witnesses and a notary.
How long does a woven wire fence last?
Iowa State University Extension puts the useful life of woven wire at about 20 years. Barbed wire runs about the same, and high-tensile about 25 years. Wood fence in Florida humidity needs sealing or staining over and over. Wire on treated posts needs far less upkeep.
Do I need a permit to build a fence in Santa Rosa County?
Unincorporated Santa Rosa County does not require a fence permit. Fences can reach 8 feet on side and rear property lines, and 4 feet inside the 25-foot front setback. Nothing goes within 20 feet of an intersection, and barbed wire is out in residential subdivisions. Property inside the Milton, Gulf Breeze or Jay city limits follows city rules.
Does an overgrown fence line cost more to fence?
Yes. Extension fence budgets leave out clearing the row. Cost guides put brush, vines and roots grown into a fence line at $2 to $5 per linear foot. Fence-line mulching runs $1 to $5 per foot. Large trees can need a bulldozer or excavator at $200 or more per hour.
