Bamboo removal around Milton, Pace and Pensacola has to start below the ground, because that is where the plant lives. Running bamboo spreads by rhizomes, which are underground stems that travel sideways in the top foot of the soil. Cut the canes off at the ground and those same rhizomes push new shoots up again on stored energy. Golden bamboo carries a Category II invasive listing in Florida, and it grows 30 to 40 feet tall around here.
Our bamboo removal is mechanical work: the canes get cut and ground, then the rhizome mat comes out. That is a different finish than a forestry mulching pass, which grinds standing growth in place and leaves the roots. It is closer to land clearing with the roots out, only aimed at one stand instead of a whole parcel. Owners who cannot dig can starve a stand instead by mowing every new shoot for 2 to 3 years.

Cutting bamboo takes the canes, and the rhizome mat under your yard keeps every bit of its stored energy. That mat can run 100 feet or more in any direction from the plant that started the stand. It can also push out roughly another 15 feet a year, which is how a fence line gets swallowed. Any rhizome fragment left in the ground regrows, so real removal has to take out the whole mat at once.
We have taken out bamboo stands more than 20 feet across here in Northwest Florida, canes and mat together. Vinegar burns the leaves and salt damages the soil, and both of them leave the rhizome mat alive underground. Pouring diesel on a stand is a pollutant discharge under Florida law, with fines that run to $25,000. The one route that works without digging is brush hogging on a schedule until the mat starves itself out.
The canes come down first, and the mulcher head grinds them into mulch right there on the spot. Then the mini excavator and root grapple pull the rhizome mat out of the top foot of soil. Sand helps the dig, since the Lakeland sand under Milton drains fast and breaks away clean from the roots. Up around Jay the Red Bay sandy loam holds a shape better, so the digging there goes slower.
What we leave is a dug, bare area where the stand used to be, ready for what comes next. Bare sand washes out in a summer afternoon storm, so plan on sod or regrading the bare patch. Our bamboo removal is mechanical work, and we do not spray herbicide on the stand or the ground. If you want a chemical follow-up on stragglers later, that is your call or a licensed applicator's job.
A running bamboo stand on the other side of the fence does not stop at your property line. Rhizomes can reach 100 feet or more from the mother plant, and they gain about 15 feet a year. The Escambia County extension office has published its own bamboo warning for the Pensacola area, with the same numbers. Digging out your side helps right away, and runners can still cross back in from the ground next door.
A root barrier along the line is the usual answer, a heavy plastic sheet 30 to 36 inches wide. It goes at least 2 feet deep and stands 6 to 8 inches above grade so runners cannot climb over. Cutting that trench is the trenching side of our excavation work, and we can quote the trench with the removal.
