Fort Walton Beach lots are small and the neighbors are close, so the machine has to fit. Skid steers with mulcher heads get through a standard gate and turn inside a city lot. They grind the understory where it stands, with nothing burned and nothing trucked out. The mulch stays down on purpose. Okaloosa County's most common soil is Lakeland sand. This coast keeps its own storm record. Hurricane Opal came ashore at Pensacola Beach in October 1995. It pushed a 12 to 14 foot storm tide into Okaloosa County, and Hurlburt Field measured a 144 mph gust. Its surge flooded the sound side along Highway 98 through Mary Esther and Fort Walton Beach. Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 did the same kind of damage on Okaloosa Island and along the sound. Every season since has sent something smaller. Downed pines, leaners and a yard full of tops are machine work: grapple, mulcher, gone, with the driveway opened first.
Between storms the work is stumps. Fort Walton Beach has decades of tree removals behind it, and the stumps sit in yards for years because grinding felt like a luxury at the time.
