The culvert is the part people underestimate. That pipe under your entrance keeps the county ditch flowing while you drive over it — sized wrong or set at the wrong fall, it backs water up, washes your new drive from underneath, and makes enemies of your downstream neighbors. Sandy soil makes an easy dig and a treacherous road. A driveway that's just gravel thrown on stripped sand lasts until the first real storm, then starts migrating into the yard. Building one that lasts is shaping work: the corridor graded with a crown so water sheds to the sides instead of running down the middle, low spots handled before they become mud pits, and gravel spread over ground that's been compacted into behaving.
Where the drive runs long — and out toward Jay, Chumuckla and the north county, they run long — the shaping matters more, because every foot is a chance for water to find a line. We build drives that give it nowhere to go but off the sides, which is the whole trick of a gravel road.
Your entrance crosses a drainage ditch that was moving water long before you bought the land, and it has to keep moving after. The culvert does that job — if it's sized for the flow, set at the ditch's fall, and bedded so it doesn't shift. Get any of those wrong and the failure modes are all bad: a flooded entrance, a washed-out drive, a ditch backing water toward the neighbors.
We set entrance culverts as part of the driveway package — pipe placed at the right depth and fall, backfilled and armored with material, and the drive built over the top. If your existing culvert is crushed, silted shut or too small (you'll know at the next big rain), we replace those too.
Most driveway calls are the start of something: a homesite going in near Pace, a camp on hunting land past Jay, a barn that finally needs real access, a parcel that sold and needs an entrance before anything else can happen. We handle the sequence — clear the corridor, set the culvert, cut and gravel the drive — so the property opens up in one mobilization.
The other calls are rescues: the drive that washes every summer, the entrance that floods, the two-rut path that was "fine" until somebody got stuck. Rebuilding those is mostly grading — fixing the shape so water stops winning. Either way, it starts with a free estimate at the property.
