How much does it cost to clear an acre of land in Florida?

Most Florida land clearing runs $500 to $2,000 per acre for light brush, $2,500 to $4,500 for moderately wooded ground, and $3,000 to $6,500 or more for heavy growth with mature trees. Method matters as much as acreage: forestry mulching usually costs a fraction of traditional clear-and-haul work.

Those are market ranges, not a quote. Every parcel prices differently, and the honest answer for your land takes an on-site look. What follows is what the numbers actually depend on, so a quote makes sense when you get one.

What does land clearing cost by vegetation density?

Density is the biggest price lever. A grassy acre with scattered saplings and a jungle of pine, palmetto, and vines are different jobs, even at the same acreage. Here is how national cost guides and Florida contractors bracket it in 2026.

Growth levelNational range (per acre)Florida range (per acre)
Light brush and saplings$500 – $2,000$500 – $2,500
Moderate: dense brush, small trees$2,000 – $3,500$1,500 – $4,500
Heavy: mature trees, thick woods$3,000 – $6,155$3,000 – $6,500+
Dense woodland, stump-heavy$5,000+$4,500 – $8,000+

Florida contractor guides put the typical all-in number for most residential jobs at $2,500 to $5,000 per acre. Panhandle growth sits on the stubborn end: palmetto and volunteer pine come back hard, and their root systems are part of why full land clearing costs more than mowing.

How does parcel size change the price?

Smaller parcels cost less in total but more per acre, because getting the machine there costs the same whether it works two hours or two days. A quarter acre of light brush can clear for a few hundred dollars. A heavily wooded half acre often lands between $1,500 and $3,100.

Going the other way, multi-acre jobs get cheaper per acre. Five acres of full clearing brackets from about $4,000 on light ground to $29,000 on dense woods. One Florida example: a 5-acre pasture conversion priced at $2,000 to $2,500 per acre, $10,000 to $12,500 total.

Why is forestry mulching so much cheaper?

Because the debris never leaves. A mulching head grinds brush and small trees where they stand, and the chips stay down as ground cover. There is nothing to pile, load, burn, or truck away. Hauling alone adds $500 to $1,500 per acre on traditional jobs, and Florida dozer clearing typically runs $2,500 to $6,000 or more per acre once grubbing and hauling are counted.

Mulching nationally runs $400 to $1,500 per acre, and Florida operators commonly quote $500 to $3,500 depending on region and growth. The trade-off: mulching leaves stumps and roots in the ground. For pasture, trails, views, and general cleanup, that is fine. For a building footprint, it is not, and our guide on clearing land to build a house covers why.

What else moves a land clearing quote?

A few line items show up again and again:

  • Stumps. Removal runs roughly $100 to $350 each, and stump grinding below grade typically $150 to $500. A parcel dotted with old stumps prices differently than clean brush.
  • Access and terrain. Tight gates, soft ground, and slopes slow the machine down. Wet ground is a real factor here; contractors commonly add a meaningful surcharge for it.
  • Debris handling. Mulch in place, burn on site with a Florida Forest Service authorization, or haul away at roughly $135 per cubic yard. The choice can swing a quote by thousands.
  • Permits. County rules vary, and fees are usually the smallest line on the invoice. The bigger risk is clearing without one. Our Florida land clearing permit guide covers Santa Rosa, Escambia, and Okaloosa counties.

How long does clearing an acre take?

A mid-size forestry mulcher works through about an acre of typical Northwest Florida growth in a day. Bigger machines on lighter ground move faster, up to several acres a day. Florida contractors quote 1 to 2 days for a standard 1-acre lot, 2 to 5 days for 2 to 5 acres, and a week or two above 10 acres. Traditional clearing runs longer because piling, loading, and hauling are their own phases.

What does a real quote need?

An address and a short conversation. Satellite photos help, but growth density, ground moisture, and access read differently in person, which is why per-acre internet numbers are a starting bracket and nothing more. Clearview Contracting Solutions clears land across Milton, Pace, Pensacola, and the rest of the panhandle, and estimates are free. Send us the property and we will give you a real number for your acre, not the internet’s.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to clear 1 acre of wooded land?
A forestry mulcher clears roughly 1 to 5 acres a day depending on the machine and the growth. A light-to-moderate wooded acre in Florida is usually a one-day job. Heavy hardwoods can stretch to a full day or more, and traditional clearing takes longer because debris has to be piled and hauled.
What is the cheapest way to clear land?
Forestry mulching is usually the cheapest professional method, around $400 to $1,500 per acre nationally versus $3,000 to $6,000 or more for traditional dozer clearing. One machine grinds everything in place, so you skip debris hauling that can add $500 to $1,500 per acre on its own.
Do I need a permit to clear my own land in Florida?
Often yes, and it depends on the county. Santa Rosa County requires county approval for most land clearing unless an exemption applies, and burning the debris always needs a Florida Forest Service authorization. Check with your county development office before machines show up.
How much does it cost to clear 5 acres of land?
Nationally, full clearing of 5 acres runs about $4,000 to $29,000 depending on density. Forestry mulching the same ground costs roughly $2,000 to $7,500. Per-acre rates usually drop on multi-acre jobs because the mobilization cost spreads out, so 5 acres should quote well under 5 times a single acre.
Is wooded or cleared land worth more?
Cleared, buildable land usually sells for more because the buyer skips thousands of dollars per acre in clearing costs. Wooded parcels can hold value in other ways: standing timber, privacy, and hunting appeal. For a homesite, selective clearing that keeps mature shade trees tends to bring the best of both.
How much does stump removal add?
Plan on roughly $100 to $350 per stump from the major cost guides, with the first stump priced higher and each additional one cheaper. Grinding a stump below grade typically runs $150 to $500. Folding stumps into a larger clearing job almost always beats hiring it out separately.
